In this series of blog posts, we will discuss each section of the Dewey Decimal System with accompanying booklist that provide a snapshot of materials available within.
The first section of the Dewey Decimal System is the 000s. This section contains books related to computer science, information and general topics. This section is further divided into 10 subsections. They are listed below:
· 000 Knowledge, the book, systems, computer science
· 010 Bibliography
· 020 Library and information sciences
· 030 General encyclopedic works
· 040 [Unassigned]
· 050 General serial publications
· 060 General organizations and museology
· 070 Documentary media, educational media, news media; journalism; publishing
· 080 General collections and quotations
· 090 Manuscripts, rare books, other rare-printed materials
There is a fair amount of flexibility innate to this section due to the broad nature of the subjects covered. Many general-purpose materials cover topics that might also exist in other sections of the Dewey decimal system. There are also notably unassigned sections. These are areas left intentionally blank in order to accommodate changing knowledge and allow expansion of specific fields. One example would be the inclusion of computing, since the concept of computers didn’t even exist when Dewey initially created the system.
