Looking for your next read? Check out Malibu Rising by Taylor Jenkins Reid, reviewed by Fulco Library staff, Mary I.
As a fan of Daisy Jones and the Six I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest, and once again she managed to have me completely absorbed by her characters and storytelling that always ring true to a specific time and place. Thoroughly enjoyable, quick-paced, and accessible.
Malibu in the 1980s: surfing, celebrities, epic parties, and four famous siblings who are beautiful, talented, and haunted by their childhoods. As they face life-altering decisions while remaining staunchly loyal to one another, the two brothers and two sisters will always have the ocean and surfing together to keep them afloat.
The Riva children grew up with a mostly absent famous father and an alcoholic mother. Their relationship is unique and touching in how they know and care for each other, even if at times moments of their story read a bit like a soap opera. But it is the origin of their parents love story, the weaving in of flashbacks to Malibu in the 1950s and two young lovers with big dreams and not much else, which really bring this family to life. The beautiful but tragic romance of Mick and June illustrates the history of the Riva family and all of the wonder and heartache that brings them to the present day will draw in any reader who is a fan of this author, historical fiction, celebrity pop culture, or for those just doing a little California dreamin’.
