Since 1967, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has promoted the celebration of International Literacy Day (ILD). This ties into their overarching mission to support education as a human right. Their goal is to promote a more literate society to allow all people to equally engage in all aspects of life. Literacy challenges are not an issue limited to certain regions of the world, but rather an issue that is international. This year’s theme is “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace”. It focusses on incorporating multilingual education into literacy work while preserving the first language skillsets. UNESCO will host a global conference in Cameroon on September 9th and 10th. The event will be broadcast live and can be viewed here.
