Central Artist Corner: Art in Residence with Etienne Jackson

About Etienne:

Etienne was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, and is a native of Opelika, Alabama. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College and a Master of Fine Arts from Georgia State University Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design.

Jackson is an accomplished sculptor, woodworker, and metal fabricator. His work has been exhibited in Ohio, Chicago, Kentucky, North Carolina, and Georgia. He has also fabricated metal works for national and regional artists. His studio practice focuses on memory experience and mnemonic associations with objects, patterns, forms, and spaces that create and maintain connections to our past and establish new transformative futures.

Through his public and private experiences, he has placed, installed, and conserved large-scale indoor and outdoor two and three-dimensional works for private clients and public entities.

“My artworks express reoccurring themes that stand out within my memory of experiences. These objects are interpretations of the natural and built environment, experiences, revelations, and understandings. Materials are chosen based on their inherent, interpreted, and perceived relationship to a concept or idea. I continually refer to the building trades because I grew up on construction sites and utilize construction techniques and formulas. These practices become metaphoric references for the greater context of building character, constructing experiences, and shaping physical and imagined space.”
