At the risk of sounding like the biggest nerd of all time, the best place in the world to be is surrounded by lots and lots of books. I, and some fellow nerds, find libraries and bookstores to be comforting, allowing time to read, thereby shutting out the world.
There are so many things that serve as distractions, with 24/7 news cycles and social media. Also, after factoring in everything we do in our lives, and the demands of work, sometimes we just need an old-fashioned book to enter the mix.
Recently, I was made aware of a long-time friend who is facing health challenges, but discovered solace in reading numerous books weekly, some with over 500 pages! His wife reports that he declares his reclusive state will be temporary; however, he is not rushing it, because he is learning new things. He said he wouldn’t have found the time to do all that reading if not for being forced to rest and take it easy, after a long work life.
Also, some retirees may be able to devote even more time to reading and learning new things, than the average one of us. Let’s not forget to pass that love of reading on to children and teens in our orbit, as well as to other adults. Television, movies, music, sports, and other things are well worth our attention and time. But, quite often, a book will challenge and inspire us, and take us to places we may never physically go.
Therefore, you are invited to stop by and visit any of the 34 libraries of the Fulton County Library System. Staff are ready to assist you with finding your latest research materials or leisure reading books. You can also read the classics again. I do that every now and then.
It’s fun. Come to the library and see what you can find to read. You’ll love it!
