Hello. Can you believe this is the 100th anniversary of Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby? Many of you probably remember that novel as one the teacher assigned, and you found it “interesting.” I invite you to try it again. It was also made into a movie.
It may be time to reconnect with the classics, and there is not a better place to do so than at the public library. Perhaps you can commit time and energy to reading at least two great pieces of literature each year. It makes for great conversation. You might want to start a book club and share your thoughts about those literary works that have stood the test of time. The Great Gatsby did not find its niche until after the author’s death. He’d considered it a failure. But the world caught on, and it is now among the canons of great writing.
Find your special escape into books, all kinds, and varied genres. You may want to read something that you would normally dismiss. Also, your love for, or need for, something to read might challenge norms or your viewpoint. Personally, I think that might be a good thing. And, of course, if you check it out at the library, you can always return it if you do not find it interesting.
Finally, ask a librarian to suggest a classic and give it a read. It may be one of the best things you do.
