Directors Blog – March 2025

Libraries can be at the center of our lives; and/or may direct and help focus our lives. They are sometimes places of refuge from the monotony of any given day. Sometimes they are learning spaces; and sometimes they are starting places.

Have you thought about what your local public library means to you?

We know they serve many purposes, at varied times in our lives. The student can quickly come to value libraries; children can develop an appreciation of the written word through books and by attending storytime and craft programs.

Hearing the spoken word continues to delight people of all ages. That’s why live performances and reading aloud are great experiences that come from visiting the library.

People still gainfully employed may go inside those stalwart walls to better refine their work skills; take a class; or find a book by their favorite author. Those in, or approaching their senior years, may find the public library to be a respite to otherwise busy days, by attending exercise classes; checking out books on cooking or decorating; or getting much needed estate and tax planning info.

There are so many things provided by your local public library. Go visit a library and find out what you need to know to start a business; attend an author’s book talk; sit quietly with a book or a magazine. It is not a waste of your time. In fact, it may well be the best time to check out a book; learn about and use online services; and gather with your neighbors, just to find out what is going on with them. If you meet them there, you already know you have at least one thing in common. See where it leads, hopefully back to the library, and a book club
