On February 7, 2024, the Board of Commissioners proudly introduced an initiative titled “Dementia Friendly Fulton,” aimed at fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for individuals affected by dementia.
Across the globe, communities are uniting to create dementia-friendly environments that enhance the quality of life for those living with this condition. In Georgia, approximately 188,000 people are currently navigating life with dementia. These individuals remain integral members of our society, actively participating in daily activities such as shopping, dining, working, and thriving. Their interactions with store owners, restaurant staff, first responders, banking employees, and countless other professionals are vital. This is where the Dementia Friendly initiative plays a crucial role. It is a grassroots social action movement designed to broaden the public’s understanding of dementia. www.dementiafriendlyfulton.com/education
In the upcoming year of 2025, the Fulton County Library System is excited to announce its partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and the Beyond Dementia Coalition to host a series of engaging quarterly workshops.
As the prevalence of dementia continues to rise, so does the imperative for accessible and accurate information for families and caregivers. These comprehensive workshops will delve into a wide range of essential topics, including the early symptoms of dementia, practical strategies for preparing oneself and loved ones for the journey ahead, and effective caregiving techniques. The workshops will be led by dedicated advocates for both the Alzheimer’s Association and the Beyond Dementia Coalition, alongside a team of trained Community Educators.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, share their thoughts, and partake in interactive question-and-answer sessions.
The overarching goal of the Dementia Friendly Fulton program is to educate everyone in the community about five key messages regarding dementia: the ways it impacts individuals, and how each of us can contribute positively to the lives of those living with dementia.
