In Atlanta, we traditionally celebrate Pride in October to coincide with National Coming Out Day. Nationally, Pride is celebrated on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which happened at the end of June in 1969. This means that our stores are full of colorful Pride merchandise twice a year, as national retail chains serve up a double dose of celebration to Atlanta. If you are confused as to how this all came to pass, don't worry! As always, the library is here with online resources to help you learn more.
Read about the Gay Rights Movement from the Encyclopedia of Contemporary United States, Third Edition, or explore Gay and Lesbian Rights with the Encyclopedia of American Law and Criminal Justice. These and other Encyclopedias are at your fingertips inside our American History portal from Infobase. These sources are so up-to-date that mentions of the 2020 Supreme Court decision on Bostock v Clayton County Georgia, which interprets the 1964 Civil Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or identity are included! This landmark decision involved softball games played in Atlanta, providing an important link between local and national history.
Just want to throw a party in honor of Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera? Pour some drinks and download some music - and enjoy living in a city so nice, we celebrate Pride twice.
