Observed annually in May, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a time to reflect upon and celebrate the exceptional role the AANHPI community has played in our country's history. The AANHPI community is often left out of American history however, they are vital to our story. In 1978, Congress passed a resolution creating Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week which expanded to a month in 1992. May was chosen to coincide with two important milestones in Asian/Pacific American history: arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States (May 7, 1843) and completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 (the majority of workers who laid the tracks were Chinese immigrants). The month is celebrated with events and activities across the country, including festivals, parades, and cultural exhibitions. Over the years, the observance has also become a time to reflect on the challenges faced by AANHPI communities including the recent rise in anti-Asian violence and hate crimes. The observance has become an important time for AANHPI communities to come together and share their stories, traditions, and experiences with others. As we celebrate Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May, let us take the time to honor and appreciate the contributions of AANHPI communities, and let us renew our commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
