November – National Family Caregiver’s Month

November is the National Family Caregiver’s Month. Caregiving is a critical position for a wide array of populations from aging parents to people of all ages with disabilities. However, external caregivers are not always feasible whether for financial reasons or for the comfort of the patient. Family caregivers fill this critical gap by providing a financial sacrifice and security in the quality of care. Caregiver Action Network started promoting November as time to celebrate and support familial caregivers. [1] In 1993, Congress passed a resolution declaring a week in November as National Family Caregivers Week. [2] In 2000, it was extended to cover the full month, by then President Clinton. [3] This has continued until the present day, with an official proclamation being produced each year. This year’s proclamation is available here. [4] There is a is also a list of resources that caregivers can use to support not only their charges, but also their own mental and physical health.
