In the form of a monthly back and forth correspondence between the class from Room 5 and Earth comes a story about how even the smallest changes can have a big impact.
The class in Room 5 starts out the New Year writing a thank you letter to Earth for all it gives them and asks what they can do for it. The wind carries their note to Earth, who happily answers them back and thus a monthly tradition starts. Each letter offers a good and simple advice, like turning off lights, using reusable water bottles, biking instead of driving or recycling etc. The children happily respond with implementing those in their lives and even come up with other ways to be Earth friendly, such as writing their notes on recycled paper or growing vegetables in their school garden.
Earth is so terribly impressed by his friends in Room 5, that he names them Earth Heroes and feels optimistic about its future in the hands of these young kids. Its advice to them is to pass it on and keep doing it.
This charming picture book makes a great family read for Earth Day by providing great lessons for all, young and old. We should all be Earth Heroes, not just on Earth Day, but every day.
